Velada, Spain

Years ago on a farm west of Madrid, a woman dreamed of being an architect but never had the opportunity to study architecture. So she created her own home, the only one she ever designed. Two generations later it remains in the family, the house still standing. Fernando, the present owner, reminisces, “my mother was very happy with the house. That’s the only one she designed, but she was a great architect.”

Vines creep up the time-worn walls and sapphire-blue skies surround. A panoramic view of the Sierra del Alguila mountains embodies the serenity as we hear nothing but the birds as they dance along the rooftops, and cows grazing in the distance.
